Castellano Pinot Grigio
Venezie, Italy, 2020
If there were a dictionary entry for the phrase ‘well made Pinot Grigio’ it would be a picture of a bottle of Castellano. While Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are wines made of the same grape, there are definite stylistic differences. The style in which Pinot Grigio is typically made is so distinctive that Gris and Grigio are often treated as different varieties, even though they have identical DNA. The Italian Grigio style, successfully adopted in the US and to a lesser extent Australia, is achieved by harvesting the grapes relatively early. This helps retain the naturally high acidity of the grape, and stainless steel fermentation maintains a freshness and liveliness. Castellano is produced in the northern region of Veneto in Cazzano di Tramigia, where wines have been produced since the 12th century. Clean yellow in the glass with lime green hints, it has excellent body and structure for its price. The flavor is fresh, with long lasting notes of apple and citrus fruits. A patio pounder for sure, but will also hold up to a nice cajun catfish filet, or a lemon kale salad with garlic and parmesan.

Vignoble Duffour Blanc
Côtes de Gascogne, France, 2019
This blend of Colombard, Gros Manseng, and Ugni Blanc from the Gascogne region has become a customer favorite, and understandably so. In the glass, the Domaine Duffour is a pale lemon-yellow color with a crisp, clean appearance and pleasantly round viscosity for a white wine. On the nose and palate, there are immediate fresh notes of Key lime pie, lemon rind, citrus grove, crushed white fruit, stone fruit and chalky minerals. Cotes de Gascogne is the IGP title for wines that are produced in an area centered on the Gers administrative department of South-West France. The countryside here is verdant, and the low rolling terrain is interspersed with small, picturesque villages. All in all, this is well suited to viticulture, as the soils and climate work together across the area to create an optimal environment for vineyards.

Carlos Serres Viura - Tempranillo Blanco
Rioja, Spain, 2021
This lovely Rioja Blanco was the run-away success at one of our Saturday tastings last spring, and it has been a big hit of the summer. Made mostly of Viura, the classic white grape of Rioja which drinks somewhat similar to Sauvignon Blanc, along with Tempranillo Blanco, a natural mutation of the red Tempranillo grape first found in 1988 and exclusive to the Rioja region. It has a bright yellow color, with aromas of apple and pineapple with subtle white floral characters. Green apple, pear, mint and almond flavors mingle through the round mouthfeel, while firm acidity keeps the fleshy texture balanced through the clean, stony finish.

Evolucio Furmint
Tokaj, Hungary, 2021
Evolucio Furmint is a dry, mineral-driven white from Tokaji, Hungary that flies under almost everyone’s wine radar. Mention Hungarian wine and most often people think of their famous (& expensive!) dessert wines, but thankfully they also produce delightful dry whites from the Furmint grape in these parts. Tokaji, located in the northeast of Hungary, is one of the world’s oldest designated wine regions with boundaries set in the mid-1700s. The volcanic nature of the soil found here and the extreme continental climate develops perfumed wines with a stony, bright personality. Evolucio Furmint is unoaked and full of citrus, flint, lime zest, green apple… totally clean flavors. This is a fantastic pairing with any goat cheese, or herbed cheese spreads like Boursin, but would also work with a wide variety of shellfish and salads.

Tablelands Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough, New Zealand, 2022
This is classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and has been one of our best sellers of the last couple years. White grapefruit, lemon and green apple notes are fresh and crisp on a delicate frame. It has lively aromas and flavors of nectarine, peach and gooseberry followed by fresh acidity and a clean finish. The palate is surprisingly fluid, without the overly sharp edges too often found in other Sauvignon Blancs, and there is an intriguing mineral quality that is reminiscent of the cool smell of a shallow mountain stream gently rolling over smooth grey stones. Lime blossom and honeydew are complemented by a tarragon and bay laurel finish. Try this with Baked Flounder with Mint, Tomato and Feta Cheese, or a Chopped Thai Chicken Salad with Spicy Peanut Dressing.

Cinco Islas Albariño
Rías Baixas, Spain, 2022
When we first sampled this Albariño several months ago, we were immediately taken with it, as it was a perfect mix of delicious flavors and an elegant, unctuous texture. Our fondness for this wine has been equally matched by our custormer's enjoyment, and it has quickly become our top selling Albariño. An intense aroma of ripe peach, pear, mango and citrus leads to a front palate that is smooth and flavorful. On the tongue it has great balance between fruit flavors of grapefruit, peach, mild tropical fruit tones, and well-integrated acidity. The finish is fresh and fruity, but also full of nuances of minerality and herbs. Grown along Spain's Northwestern Atlantic coast, it has a mild briney, almost saline back tone, indicative of the oceanic influence of the region. It can work just as perfectly as an aperitif as it does with a meal, especially any seafood, and shows why Albariño has forged a place as the best known Spanish white wine in the domestic market.

Steininger Grüner Veltliner Grand Cru Reserve
Kamptal, Austria, 2021
The family run Steininger winery is situated in Langenlois in the Kamptal Valley. The region is well-known for Grüner Veltliner, which is also the strength of the winery, with about 80% of their production being from that classic Austrian grape. This is their top end offering, from their very best vineyard, and from the best fruit of the harvest. The ripe fruit ferments in stainless steel and then goes into large Acacia wood casks for malolactic fermentation and aging. The 2021 might well be the finest edition of this long-time favorite we have ever offered. It serves up the perfect blend of ripeness, richness, zesty acids and dusty minerality for solo sipping or pairing at the table with pretty much anything you want to eat. Lovely green freshness mingles with very ripe pear and granny smith apple on the nose, with both elements also in play on the rounded, zesty palate, with that classic touch of white pepper on the finish that screams Grüner Veltliner. While a classic pairing with spicy Thai food, this would also work well with any ceviche or tartare, and can also sing with dishes as disperse as zucchini gratin to escargot with morels and asparagus.

St. Kilda Shiraz
South Eastern Australia, 2021
St. Kilda Shiraz has been our ‘go-to’ affordable Australian Shiraz for quite a while now. St. Kilda is produced by De Bartoli Wines, and is a brand aiming at incredible value and high quality from premium Southeast Australian fruit. The label depicts the iconic entrance of Luna Adventure Park located in the center of St. Kilda, a nod to the spirit of the place and the style of the wines. South Eastern Australia, rather than being classified as a wine region in the traditional sense, is officially classified as a ‘viticultural super zone.’ It measures some 1,250 miles and reaches from the Pacific coast in Queensland to the Indian Ocean. The sheer scale of this zone and the diversity of its climates, zones, and latitudes make it a virtual spice market for winemakers to choose from when selecting their vineyards and their grapes. This Shiraz has a deep red color with purple hues, and aromas of mixed berries and spice standing out alongside hints of mint and mocha. The palate is rich and lush, with ripe berries, plum, and a hint of baking spice and chocolate.

Domaine St. George Cabernet Sauvignon
California, 2020
One wine that we seem to always be on the hunt for is the great, everyday California Cab, one that balances affordability and quality, yet still tasting truly of Cabernet Sauvignon and not just like ‘red wine’. Well, we found a definite winner here with the Domaine St. George! Based primarily on fruit from Sonoma County, it over-delivers with concentration and finesse. Ripe black cherry and cedar aromas combine on the nose, with a touch of vanilla oak in the background. It is richly flavored with black currant and black cherry accents, with mild tones of smoke and mint. It is velvety and soft yet intense on the palate, with lingering berry flavors.

Guenoc Petite SIrah
California, 2019
Back in my restaurant days in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Guenoc Petite Sirah was a constant on all the wine lists I worked on, as it delivered so much as such a great value. As I ventured more into the sales and retail world, it had fallen off my radar, so I was thrilled to stumble upon it again after many years and find that not only was it still a screaming bargain, but still very tasty as well. It is classic of the big, ripe, hedonistic California style that can be so delectable. It is full-bodied, with robust wild blackberry and blueberry flavors at the core. Smoky black tea, caraway seed, white pepper and gingerbread accents linger on the finish, where the tannins firm up. This is the perfect wine for any slow roasted meats, a juicy blackened Ribeye, or a hearty Lentil Stew with Spinach.

La Maialina 'Gertrude' Red Blend
Tuscany, Italy, 2019
45% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot
Gertrude has been our best selling Italian Red for at least 3 years now. This blend is what we might call a 'Baby' Super-Tuscan. The term Super-Tuscan was coined by journalists in the 1970’s to describe a handful of wines from Tuscany that were using non-traditional grapes. Due to the grapes used, these wines could only be called ‘Table Wines’ according to Italian wine laws, although their quality was far above normal table wine levels. This wine offers remarkable value for the complex flavors it delivers. A bright acidity supports robust flavors of grilled meat, fennel, spice, black cherry, dark chocolate and tobacco into a satisfying, lengthy finish.

Tranquille Pinard!
Vin de France, 2022
We may have found the perfect red wine for the transition from hot weather to cold. This is a great wine for those moving from the white wines and rosé of summer back to drinking red wines, but don't want something too heavy quite yet. Just a touch darker than some more robust rosé wines, the Tranquille Pinard! is an easy going, fresh, lively red wine, made in a similar style to the Beaujolais wines often known as 'glou glou'. These are wines not meant to be thought about and pondered over, but just ones you can take great pleasure in drinking. Coming out of the Rhone Valley, this is a blend of Grenache and Syrah, grown in organic clay and limestone vineyards, and is fantastic with a slight chill. Ripe and juicy, but still dry, this has lots of accents of raspberry, red plum, and wild berry, with excellent acidity keeping it zesty on the finish. Wonderful as an aperitif, but can also work really well with Barbeque or Charcuterie. (The wine name is a playful ididom for 'Peaceful Drunk', so if you have one more glass than you should, know you are not alone!)

Lacroix Bordeaux Supériur
Bordeaux, France, 2018
While there are many revered Bordeaux wines out there, the lion's share sell for quite high prices, and it is always a daunting task to find a value oriented Bordeaux of quality. We've really been thrilled with how well we did finding this one, and it really over-delivers for the money. It is a classic blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Cabernet Franc. It has elegance and structure, but also drinkability. Dark current and black cherry aromas mingle with scents of graphite, loamy earth and leather. It is medium-bodied, with some heft but not overwhelming, and flavors of cherry, mocha, cassis, and earthy supple tannins on the finish. Wonderful with Prime Rib or Leg of Lamb, it would also work very well with Rogue Creamery Smokey Blue cheese.

Orfila Malbec
Mendoza, Argentina, 2018
The Orifla Winery has been producing fantastic wines out of Argentina since 1905. They have vineyards in the renowned Lujan de Cuyo and Maipú Cuyo in Mendoza, ranging between 1,950 to 3,200 feet elevation. The grapes from each vineyard are fermented seperately in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, followed by 70% of the wine being aged for 7 months in a combination of 70% French and 20% American oaks, and then bottle aged for 3 months. Their 2019 has a bright red color with purple hues, and aromatics of dark fruits, ripe blackberies and plums. On the palate the wine is flavorful and intense with good mouthfeel. Dark fruit flavors are present through a supple finish, showing concentrated ripe, juicy plum and black raspberry fruit. This would be excellent with Steak Fajitas, a smoky Chickpea and Lentil Stew, or a Shepherd’s Pie pepped up with Caribbean Jerk Seasonings and Sweet Potatoes.

Evolution Pinot Noir
Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2021
Evolution is a second label for esteemed Oregon winery Sokol Blosser. The Evolution line first focused on blended wines but now does single variety wines like this charming Pinot Noir. The 2021 vintage in Oregon, despite a ‘heat dome’ of extreme temperatures in June, was warm but not hot, leading to wines with great concentration, wonderful lift and freshness, and really fine tannins. It was an ‘easy’ vintage compared to the heartbreaking 2020 vintage and it’s unprecedented smoke damage from wildfires. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, Evolution Pinot Noir exhibits aromas and flavors of bright red and jammy fruit tones of black plum, chocolate covered cherries, and baking spice. The mouthfeel is round and rich, with some good tannins to soften the acidity in the long finish. Wonderful with a wood-fire pizza with lots of mushrooms, or pork chops caramelized with brown sugar and fish sauce.

Gobelsburg Zweigelt
Niederösterreich, Austria, 2019
If you are a Zinfandel fan, then you will likely enjoy Zweigelt. A hybrid grape developed in 1922 by crossing the Saint-Laurent and Blaufrankish grapes, Zweigelt is not the most widely planted red-wine grape in Austria. Coming from the heralded 2019 vintage in Austria, the Gobelsburg Zweigelt is a charmer. Rich cherry fruit aromas mix with notes that are a little piquant and peppery, and perhaps even have a touch of almond. Medium-bodied with bright acidity, it has big flavors of ripe dark cherry, blackberry, and wood spice accents. Everytime I taste this wine is makes me think of a meeting of Zinfandel and Pinot Noir, and is wonderfully versatile in its food pairings. From rare tuna to spicy pad thai to lamb kabobs or beef stew - it's harder to find dishes this wine doesn't work with than ones it does!

Chateau de la Bonneliere 'Rive Gauche'
Chinon, France, 2021
Chateau de la Bonneliere is a historic estate, that had fallen into disrepair in the mid-1900s. The will and hard work of two generations brought it back into stellar condition. Pierre Plouzeau bought the family property in 1976, and both renovated the castle and replanted the vineyards. He built a modern winery and began bottling their beautiful Cabernet Franc from the Chinon appellation in 1989. Pierre's son, Marc, took over the domain in 1999, and continued to develop the estate, going fully organic and perfecting the cellar. His 2021 Rive Gauche is 100% Cabernet Franc, the classic grape of Chinon. Spicy raspberry and blackberry aromas are complemented by dried violet and white pepper. Juicy, light-bodied dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are nicely straightforward and fresh, benefiting from a zesty jolt of minerals on the back end. It is brisk and very easy to drink, in a manner not too far off from a Beaujolais manner. It's ultimate pairing might be with a traditional French Cassoulet, but don't miss this wine next to North Carolina Barbecue, or actually any recipe of vinegar and tomato based dishes.
